Psalms 139:14 tells us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. I looked it up and fear here means reverence, honor or respect. Also wonderfully here means to be distinguished. So when God created us, He made us in such a way that we are to be honored and distinguished. To be distinguished means that others recognize or treat you as different, unique. Very nice indeed! That should make you want to respect yourself on a different level because God created you to be just that! So even though we were made in God’s image, he made us respectable and different in our own right. So how do we carry ourselves in honorable and distinguishable ways?
According to 1Timothy 2:9, women should adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety. To be modest here means orderly or well arranged. Shamefacedness here means to have regard and respect for others. Sobriety here means soundness of mind and self-control. So as young ladies, you should make sure you act and dress in an orderly fashion. Your attitude towards others should always be respectful, and be sure to maintain self-control in all you do. These are things we can all do, despite our uniqueness. I believe the way to dress in an orderly fashion means to dress in a way that will not be viewed as disrespectful to yourself or others. You should make sure that the words on your clothing are not rude or violent, and that you are not showing skin in a way that may seem inviting to someone to touch or treat you in an overtly sexual way. I could write a whole post on that, but for now I am sure you have a pretty good idea of what I mean.
Now the second part of this scripture says that a godly woman should not adorn herself with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array. This simply means to not make beautifying your appearance more important than allowing your beauty to radiate from within. Proverbs 31:25 says a godly woman wears strength and honor. Here, honor refers to beauty, splendor, ornaments, and magnificence. If honor can include beauty, splendor, or ornaments, obviously God doesn’t mind us adorning ourselves to look nice. He actually encourages it! Just don’t let being beautiful on the outside be your main focus. We have all seen examples of this in one way or another. For example, a young lady that always wears really nice clothes and jewelry, but always has something negative to say about someone or something. Not cool.
So being fearfully and wonderfully made means that we have to carry ourselves in respectful ways and this will make us stand out, therefore unique. Truly, nowadays, being respectful all the time will make you stand out in practically every environment we find ourselves. Giving people eye contact while speaking to them, at least in the American culture, respecting other people’s perspectives without trying to make them feel bad if they are different from your own, not using vulgar language, and not showing all your booty or tatas when you are public will definitely distinguish you from the image of what our society tolerates for young ladies. You don’t want to be tolerated, you want to be appreciated. Most people appreciate others who are respectful of themselves and others, as respecting others shows that you respect yourself. So embrace your God-given uniqueness. Whatever your style or temperament, reserved of outgoing, make sure these qualities are expressed respectfully and you are well on your way to being what God has created you to be!
